Three of Bayfield’s 7 win Day 1 at state

Eckstein, McMenimen and Rhodes win Round 1

Bayfield High School took a hard seven to the CHSAA Class 3A Wrestling State Championships this weekend at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

“We came out pretty well,” too, BHS head coach Todd McMenimen said after Day 1 of the state tournament.

A trio of Wolverines earned victories to keep their place in the winning bracket, while the remaining four will have to wrestle back through the consolation bracket.

“We had a pretty tough draw,” McMenimen said.

Matt Eckstein, the Wolverines’ heavyweight, pinned Dorian Richard of Valley; Colter McMenimen, the coach’s son, defeated Jorge Martinez of Sheridan 8-2 at 126 pounds; and Drake Rhodes won a 6-5 decision over Ben Gutierrez of University.

The coach and father said his son wrestled “pretty strong, but nothing great.”

Rhodes wrestled “a really smart, tactical match,” coach McMenimen said. “I think our conditioning prevalied with that win in the third period.”

Eckstein “looked good,” coach McMenimen said. “He got after him right away.”

Tyler Beebe was pinned by Trenton Piatt of Olathe at 120 pounds.

A shoulder injury suffered last week hurt Allec Rodriguez, his coach said, in another loss by pin to Jacob Solseth of Olathe at 132 pounds: “He just didn’t have the strength he should’ve.”

Joe Zink at 145 pounds and Matt Cerdas at 220 pounds lost very similar matches Day 1 in Denver.

Zink “had an opportunity to win,” McMenimen said. “He looked good, then he just flat ran out of gas.”

Zink lost 9-6 to the No. 1 seed, Anthony Mozal of Valley.

Cerdas, “same thing,” McMenimen said. “He just spent the last 1½-minutes on his feet, not pushing the pace enough.”

Cerdas lost 6-4 to the No. 1 seed, Justice Reddick of Platte Canyon.

“You don’t come up to state and get any easy ones,” coach McMenimen said.
