From seven to three to two, the Bayfield High School wrestling team has a pair of wrestlers alive and is assured of at least one placer at the CHSAA Class 3A Wrestling State Championships after Day 2 on Friday.
Colter McMenimen was pinned by Joseph Prieto of Holy Family in 1 minute, 10 seconds in the semifinals Friday night after McMenimen beat Jake Schoenfield of Salida 8-3 in the quarterfinals at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
McMenimen will wrestle in the consolation semifinals Saturday in hopes of reaching the third-place match. Hes secured a place in the top six at 126 pounds.
BHS heavyweight Matt Eckstein lost his morning match in the winners bracket to Corby Wyett of Bennett by pin in 5:17, then pinned Miles Keane of St. Marys in 1:37 in the consolation bracket to reach Saturdays consolation quarterfinals. If he beats Oscar Soto of Brush, hell also earn a spot on the podium.
It wasnt the greatest of days, BHS coach Todd McMenimen said.
Drake Rhodes (138), the only other Bayfield wrestler still in the winners bracket Friday, lost 3-2 to Andrew Register of The Classical Academy before being eliminated from the tournament in a 14-4 loss to Dalton Gregory of Pagosa Springs.
At this point, theyre all pretty good when you get to the second day of the state tournament, coach McMenimen said of the Wolverines competition.
Rhodes joined Tyler Beebe (120), Allec Rodriguez (132), Joe Zink (145) and Matt Cerdas (220) on the outside looking in after all four lost their consolation-round matches Day 2 of the three-day tournament.
I really didnt feel like we wrestled poorly, McMenimen said. Every one of those matches we lost, we were in them unitl the very end, and we had opportunities to pull it out and win them.
Beebe lost to Evan Reed (Lamar) 7-0; Rodriguez lost to Anthony Contreraz (Sheridan) by pin in 2:05; Zink lost to John Pearce (Sheridan) 10-7; and Cerdas lost to Jacob Wood (Salida) 2-0.
Bayfields Intermountain League brethren, Alamosa, leads the Class 3A tournament after Day 2 with 118.5 points, and Bennett is second with 97. Bayfield has 16 points.
