The city of Durango will hold a mail ballot election April 2 to send three residents to City Council. Before Election Day, however, there are several important dates of which all city voters should be aware.
The last day for a new elector to register and be eligible to vote in this election is March 4. Eligible people may register at the La Plata County Clerks office at 98 Everett Street, Suite C, or online at the Colorado Secretary of States website, www.GoVoteColorado.com.
Beginning March 15, mail-in ballots for this election will be sent from the Durango City Clerk to all active registered electors who live in the city of Durango. Ballots will not be mailed to inactive registered voters, residents who are registered to vote but did not vote in the November 2012 general election and did not respond to the address Confirmation Card mailed to them by the La Plata County Clerk in January. If you fit this category, you may still vote, but you will have to either go to the City Clerks office at 949 East Second Ave, Durango, in person, with an acceptable identification, and apply for a ballot or change your inactive status. If you want to verify your registration status or change your status, you can do this on the Colorado Secretary of States website www.GoVoteColorado.com or call or visit the La Plata County Clerks office. There will be drop-off boxes available at the county clerk and the city clerks offices beginning March 18 where voters may return their ballots if they do not want to mail them.
If you are a resident of Durango, verify your voter status to ensure that you receive a ballot and exercise your right to vote in this election.
The League of Women Voters of La Plata County will host a Candidate Forum for all City Council candidates at 5:30 p.m. March 14 in City Council Chambers.
We invite you to join us.
