Dyslexia conference to be held in Ignacio
The Diamonds in the Rough Dyslexia Conference will be held March 15 and 16 at Sky Ute Casino Events Center in Ignacio.
Workshops will feature discussion about executive functioning, assistive technologies, identification and treatment of dyslexia and acquiring math competencies.
The keynote speaker will be Jon Pearson, who will give a talk called Drawing Out the Best in Your Brain, which will focus on turning ideas into living images through drawing techniques. Overviews of the programs are available at local schools.

La Plata energy council offers scholarships
La Plata County Energy Council is offering a $1,000 scholarship to graduating high school seniors from La Plata County in the spring of 2013.
The Aulbert Memorial Scholarship is intended for students who have a parent working in the natural-gas industry or for related service company that is an energy council member.
Applications for the scholarships are available through high school counselors or by visiting www.energycouncil.org. Click on Scholarships & Grants and download the Word file. The council is a nonprofit trade organization that promotes safe and responsible natural-gas production in La Plata County.
Dyslexia seminar to be held Saturday
The Liberty School, on the second floor of 215 E. 12th St., will offer a half-day free seminar from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday for parents who would like to learn more about dyslexia and learn more about how to help their children who may have difficulty learning to read.

Liberty School to host cardboard sled race
The Liberty School will host the tournament-style Cardboard Sled Race 2013 at 9 a.m. Saturday at Chapman Hill.
Participants can design and build a sled out of only cardboard, duct tape, zip ties and paint.
Money raised will go to the Liberty Schools sister school the Djabal Refugee Camp School in Sudan, Africa.
The entry fee is $5 per team member, and with this money, the sister school can buy classroom supplies, books, teacher training and materials for facilities.

Fort Lewis College offers continuing education
The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
Retirement Planning 101: How to Develop Your Retirement Plan Properly will be taught by Roger OKeefe on Tuesdays and Thursdays from March 12 to 21. This course is intended to help future retirees enjoy a successful retirement. Special attention will be paid to retirement challenges facing Americans today. The cost is $69 for four classes.
Train-the-Trainer: Best Practices for Training Volunteers and Staff will be offered by Carol Rhan to people in nonprofit, faith-based and for-profit businesses. Students will learn how to develop subject matter, design training that meets the needs of adult learners and their trainers, identify ways to know if learning occurred and how to present in front of a group. Classes will be held Wednesday and Monday evenings from March 13 to April 1. The cost is $149 for six classes and includes a workbook.

Cowboy Luau fundraiser to be held March 23
The Bayfield Early Education Programs will host the seventh annual Cowboy Luau at 6 p.m. March 23 at the Billy Goat Saloon in Gem Village.
The event will feature door prizes, chili supper, music by the Wild Country Band and a silent and live auction. Auction items include raft trips, lodging, a helicopter ride and a quarter horse. The cost is $5 with all proceeds benefiting the Bayfield Early Education Programs, a 501 (C)3 organization.

Registration for Durango School District 9-R 2013-14 preschool and kindergarten programs will be held at these elementary schools:

All registrations will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, and families do not need an appointment but are welcome to come anytime that day. People should bring the childs birth certificate, immunization information and a utility bill that shows proof of residency. Students are eligible for kindergarten if they are 5 years old before Sept. 1.

21st Century Classroom to be discussed March 7
Durango School District will host a 21st Century Classroom discussion from 6 to 7 p.m. March 7 at Durango High School.
Superintendent Dan Snowberger and members of the school board will lead the discussion.
Durango High School to hold spring sports meeting
A mandatory meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the Durango High School gym for all spring athletes, parents and coaches.
After the 7 p.m. meeting, a short meeting will be held with each individual sport in various assigned rooms.
People who attended the fall or winter sports general meeting do not need to attend the spring sports general meeting from 7 to 7:30 p.m., but they will need to attend the individual sport meeting beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Durango 4-C Council annual report available
The 2011-12 annual report of the Durango 4-C Council is available for distribution.
The council is a private, nonprofit agency that operates Tri-County Head Start/Early Head Start in the tri-county area of Archuleta, La Plata and Montezuma counties. The 2011-12 report also includes the Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, through June of 2012.

Nominations being sought for employees of the year
Nominations are now invited for the Durango School District 9-R Outstanding Employees of the Year.
Nominees will be recognized at the annual 9-R Employee Appreciation Celebration at 4:30 p.m. May 2 at Morehart Murphy Auto Center. The event is hosted by Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence.
Special recognition will be given to one teacher at each school level, plus three staff members. Winners will receive cash awards and plaques. All nominees receive certificates of recognition. Nominations are welcomed from school district employees, parents, students and community members.

Florida Mesa Elementary to host math night
Florida Mesa Elementary School will host its annual Family Math Night from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday.
The evening allows families to circulate and play math games anytime between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Each classroom will have math games. The computer lab will be open so people can learn about math websites.
Each family will be given a math passport to be stamped as they circulate in the school. Passports will be entered in a drawing at the end of the evening. Families and community members are invited to attend.
