Thank you for the Herald editorial on Feb. 22 concerning Sen. Ellen Roberts legislative report recommending that gun violence in Colorado be sent to a committee to be studied. This is the epic kick the can down the road that we see daily at the national level and now at the state level by our state senator.
On the other side, we should support our Rep. Mike McLachlan for addressing the issue and supporting these four needed laws. None of the four laws restricts our Second Amendment rights. I am a gun owner, a past member of the NRA and shot expert rifle and pistol when I served in the U.S. Navy. Mike McLachlan served in the U.S. Marine Corps and knows how deadly modern weapons are.
In my recent memory, Colorado has suffered from three shootings that could have been avoided or made less lethal by the current proposed legislation: Columbine, Aurora and the less-known death of a young girl hostage at the Platte Valley Middle School near Bailey several years ago.
Owning a weapon is a right, but with every right come responsibilities. Most Americans, including most gun owners, know that safety has to come first on the range and in the woods. The same applies in our homes and schools. These victims, their families, our innocent kids deserve a vote.
