100 years ago: Miss Elizabeth Hawkey, a very attractive little lady, arrived from the East last night to take charge of the millinery department at Steins.
75 years ago: U.S. Highway 550, Durango to Silverton, is blocked by several snow slides and by drifting snow. A storm of near-blizzard proportions is raging in the mountains north of Durango, and the highway wont be open until the storm subsides.
50 years ago: OURAY Search resumed at dawn this morning for a minister and two of his daughters who were swept from U.S. 550 south between Ouray and Silverton. Missing and believed dead are the Rev. Marvin Hudson, 47, of North River Road, Ouray, and his daughters, Amelia 17, and Pauline, 11. Rescuers searched the snowy mass alongside U.S. 550 at the site of the East Riverside side area, cautious that the West Riverside slide might go at any time.
25 years ago: A four-year battle to determine where La Plata County will build additional court space ended with a shovel breaking ground south of the existing courthouse at 1060 East Second Ave. A ground-breaking ceremony for the $2.19 million courthouse expansion and remodeling project was scheduled.
