New moon, comet talk to be held Monday
Durango Nature Studies will host a New Moon Astro-Tour and PanSTARRS Comet Talk from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Durango Nature Center.
The event is free for members, and $10 for nonmembers. Astronomer John Buting will share his knowledge and his telescopes for the programs that will be held throughout the year. On Monday, the PanSTARRS Comet should be visible right before dark. In addition, Jupiter should be visible at twilight.

Compensation available to Hispanics, women
Hispanic or women farmers or ranchers who believe the U.S. Department of Agriculture has improperly denied them farm-loan benefits between 1981 and 2000 because they are Hispanic or female, may be eligible to apply for compensation.

Bark beetle workshops to be held
Mountain Studies Institute and its partners will host a workshop about bark beetle infestations from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 10 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
The workshop will explore the water-related effects of bark-beetle infestations in the San Juans and the Rocky Mountain West. Others partnering in the workshop are Western Water Assessment, San Juan Headwaters Forest Health Partnership and Firewise Communities of Southwest Colorado.
Also, an open house about the same topic will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. April 9 at the Ross Aragon Community Center, East Tile Room, 452 Hot Springs Blvd. in Pagosa Springs.

Old Broads to host meet, greet Tuesday
Great Old Broads for Wilderness will host a meet and greet with its new executive director, Shelley Silbert, and staff members from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at 605 East Seventh Ave.
