Garcia tops All-RMAC selections

DHS alumna leads four FLC basketball picks
Katerina Garcia, who led the fourth-seeded Fort Lewis College Skyhawks to an 11-point victory over CSU-Pueblo in the RMAC Shootout quarterfinals Tuesday night at Whalen Gym, also led the conference in assists. And for that, the Durango High School alumna and FLC senior point guard was named to the All-RMAC First Team on Wednesday.
FLC men jump; FLC women hold

The Skyhawks got a boost to their postseason hopes.

The Fort Lewis College men’s basketball team (20-6, 16-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) jumped five spots in the final weekly NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings despite splitting its final two road games last weekend, finishing the regular season at No. 2.

The FLC women (18-9, 16-6 RMAC), who also split their road games over the weekend, held steady at No. 8.

The rankings assist the NCAA in awarding bids and seeding for the Division II playoffs, which will begin March 16. The top eight teams in the South Central Region will qualify for the tournament, in addition to automatic bids for the winner of the RMAC Shootout.

NCAA selections will occur at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

In the men’s rankings, RMAC rival Metro State held on to the top spot, while Adams State now sits sixth. Out of conference, Midwestern State (Texas) is third, Newman (Kansas) is fourth, St. Mary’s (Texas) is fifth, Cameron (Oklahoma) is seventh and Tarleton State (Texas) is eighth.

West Texas A&M and Arkansas-Fort Smith are ninth and 10th, respectively.

In the women’s rankings, two of FLC’s RMAC competitors rank higher: Colorado Mesa is first and Metro State fifth.

Midwestern State is second, Abilene Christian (Texas) is third, Texas-Permian Basin is fourth, St. Mary’s is sixth and Tarleton State seventh.

West Texas A&M sits in ninth and Incarnate Word of Texas 10th.
