75 years ago: Undersheriff Clarence Handley foiled an attempted jail break by three guests of La Plata County. Three men had dug through the north wall of the main jail cell and were working on the last stone when Handley heard the noise and investigated. The digging had apparently been in process some four weeks before it was discovered.
25 years ago: Workers and residents of the La Plata County Youth Home are enjoying a new setting, decorated in mauves, beiges and dusty blues. On Feb. 3, the home for children ages 12 to 18 who need a temporary shelter as a result of family conflict moved from the historic three-story building at 11th Street and Third Avenue it had occupied for eight years. The new 10-bedroom youth home is at 2790 East Second Ave.
