It seems to me in the debate about guns that there are some who are unfamiliar with the text of the Second Amendment. It states:
A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
Within that phrase, there is an enormous amount of room for smart people to debate what well-regulated or militia means. Also, we already have regulated what arms are currently allowed. If there is a chance that there is smart legislation that could keep a gun out of the hands of a person who would harm innocents, we should consider it. The act of considering such laws and passing them if they make sense is consistent with the language of the Second Amendment, and not many have labeled it unconstitutional or un-American.
