Durango High School got its first taste of Southwestern League baseball Saturday. Fortunately for the Demons, the game didnt count toward their SWL record.
Fruita Monument beat DHS 7-6 at Ricketts Park in Farmington and relegated their SWL foe to fourth place at the Piedra Vista Tournament.
The next time these two teams meet, it will count in the SWL standings.
We matched up pretty well; we just need to clean up our game, DHS head coach Rob Coddington said.
It was the little things that did DHS in: a baserunning mistake on offense and a baserunning mistake on defense; the first cost them a run and maybe more, and the second cost them the game.
Down 6-0 early, DHS rallied. Blake Dunlap tripled with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, but a runner failed to touch third base en route to the plate and was called out inning over.
Durango tied it at 6, then Fruita Monument scratched across a run in the bottom of the sixth when a Wildcats runner escaped a rundown to eventually score the game-winning run.
Jeremy Szura pitched six innings on the DHS mound.
He did a good job competing, Coddington said. He gave us a chance to get the win, but we still have to get over that defensive hump. Were spotting people some runs.
DHS (5-3) has a week to clean up some things, which Coddington is confident the Demons will, before it hosts Montrose at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in its home and SWL opener.
