DHS finds focus too late

Demons baseball rallies but only wins momentum swinging forward
Durango right fielder Blake Dunlap narrowly missed a diving catch on a long foul ball Saturday, and DHS just couldn’t quite catch up to Montrose’s early outburst. Montrose beat Durango 14-10 in the Demons’ home- and Southwestern League-opener.
Casey Dunlap, Cole Dunegan and Durango tightened up defensively after four errors in the first three innings, but a late rally wasn’t enough to topple Montrose in a 14-10 loss Saturday at DHS.
Isiah Mayberry was 1-for-2 on Saturday, including a seventh-inning home run, but Durango dug itself too big of a hole, falling behind by 10 before losing 14-10 to Montrose.
Jeremy Szura got off the mound to throw out Montrose’s Ben Cruz, but the junior thought he and his fellow Durango relief pitchers could’ve been a bit better Saturday. “I guess the relievers should’ve got a little bit more focused, too, as well,” he said. “Throw a little bit more strikes, give opportunities for plays.”
Durango left fielder Sean Blanchard made a nice running catch to end the third inning, running a long way into the gap to retire Montrose’s Tyrus Lopez. Montrose, however, retired Durango 14-10.
