Doug McDermotts second go tops All-America team
Creightons Doug McDermott is an All-American for the second consecutive year while Trey Burke of Michigan and Otto Porter Jr. of Georgetown tied as the leading vote-getters for The Associated Press first team.
Victor Oladipo of Indiana and Kelly Olynyk of Gonzaga are the other players on the team announced Monday.
Burke, the dynamic point guard, and Porter, the smooth, solid forward, both received 62 first-team votes and 319 points from the same 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25.
Oladipo, whose all-around play kept the Hoosiers in the No. 1 ranking longer than any other team this season, was third in the voting. McDermott, the efficient scorer, is the 51st repeat selection and the second in as many years following Jared Sullinger of Ohio State.
Olynyk, who became the countrys best center, rounds out the first team.
NCAAs Madness will run with paying-players lawsuit
SAN FRANCISCO Four years ago, former UCLA standout Ed OBannon filed a lawsuit that has blossomed into one of the biggest legal threats the NCAA has ever faced over the issue of paying student athletes who attract billions of dollars in revenue annually.
And as the mens basketball tournament reaches the Final Four, the most recent court filing from the NCAA highlights how much is at stake.
Weeks ago, the organization submitted more than 2,000 pages of legal arguments urging a judge to block the players attempts to turn the lawsuit into a class action, which could put the NCAAs financial exposure into the billions.
U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken has scheduled a hearing in June to consider the class action request, which university administrators have lined up to oppose.
Crosbys broken jaw doesnt keep Penguins from jawing
PITTSBURGH The Pittsburgh Penguins went through their first practice Monday since learning that NHL scoring leader Sidney Crosby underwent surgery for a broken jaw that will keep him out of indefinitely.
Winners of 15 consecutive games, two shy of the NHL record for longest winning streak, the Penguins insist they can keep rolling without the face of their franchise.
Pittsburghs streak will be on the line Tuesday night against Buffalo.
Crosby was still hospitalized early Monday while his teammates went through a lengthy and spirited practice. It was the first time Jarome Iginla worked with Pittsburgh after he was acquired in a trade with the Calgary Flames early Thursday. He made his Penguins game debut during Saturdays 2-0 win over the New York Islanders.
Seahawks send Flynn to Oakland for draft pick
ALAMEDA, Calif. The Oakland Raiders have traded for Seattle backup quarterback Matt Flynn in the teams latest change at the games most important position.
The deal announced by the Seahawks on Monday signals the end to Carson Palmers tenure in Oakland. Palmer is expected to be dealt to Arizona.
Oakland will send a fifth-round pick in 2014 and a conditional pick in 2015 to Seattle for Flynn, who left Green Bay and signed a lucrative free agent contract with Seattle last year. But he couldnt beat out rookie Russell Wilson for the starting job.
The Raiders also will receive a late-round pick from Arizona if the trade for Palmer is completed.
The Raiders traded a 2012 first-round pick and 2013 second-rounder to Cincinnati for Palmer midway through the 2011 season.
