On March 14, the weather maker turned a cold shoulder on us and plunk went the thermometer to 4 below zero. 14 days later we were basking in a temperature of 69.
75 years ago: According to the Secretary of the La Plata County Board of Welfare, the problem of transient families coming into Durango to find work where there is none and who are in need of relief is becoming steadily worse. An average of two families a day have been drifting into Durango.
50 years ago: An estimated 200 students from 15 high schools on the Western Slope competed in typing, bookkeeping and shorthand tests on Business Achievement Day being held at Fort Lewis A&M.
25 years ago: The town of Ignacio has canceled its mayoral and town board elections because of lack of participation. Mayor Balty Quintana was running unopposed, and there were only two people running for three seats up for election on the town board.
