Fort Lewis College freshman Dean Haas was dominant in his first-ever Squawker Road Classic criterium. He and teammate Renan Maia led an early breakaway, lapped the field, then emerged from the pack to finish 1-2 in Saturday’s race in downtown Durango. “I attacked off the start, attacked again, attacked again,” Haas said.

Renan Maia and Dean Haas proved that FLC cycling has nowhere to go but up. The two freshmen finished 1-2 in the Squawker Road Classic’s criterium Saturday in downtown Durango, leading a breakway group that even lapped the peloton. “We knew it was a difficult course, a technical course, so we knew we had to stay at the front,” Maia said.

After a last-lap crash that sent a Colorado Mines cyclist to the hospital on a backboard, Lauren Catlin had to sit back and settle for fifth place in the Squawker Road Classic women’s criterium Saturday in downtown Durango. “I’ll take that over road rash,” she said.
