Expansion of the expert terrain at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort started this week with tree-felling operations west of the current Chairlift 8 runs.Purgatory will add 125 acres of new, expert terrain that is scheduled to open in December, weather and snow conditions permitting.
The expansion, located west of Elliott's, will extend the resort boundary to comprise 1,200 vertical feet of new fall-line skiing and riding.
The project will expand the area's total skiable acreage by 10 percent to 1,325 acres.
The project is the fist major expansion of terrain at Purgatory since the 1980s.
"This steep, tree-skiing zone is a great completment to our existing terrai," said Sven Brunso, DMR vice president of sales and marketing.
"We are excited to be one of the few resorts in the Southwest making substantial on-mounain improvements this season,"he said.
The project is the first phase of a series of improvements planned for the Legends area.
Future work will include the replacement of the Legends Chairlift (No. 8) with a high-speed quad.
Additional clearing to open more terrain also is in the future plans.
