Russell Hubert rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns Friday night as the Ignacio Bobcats opened the 2009 football season with a 35-12 victory over visiting Monte Vista.
"It was kind of a sloppy game," Ignacio head coach Lupe Huerta said.
"We had three touchdowns called back on ... goofy penalties. Other than that, we moved the ball pretty well.
He said Hubert, a senior power back, also had an 80-yard scoring run called back because of a holding penalty.
"Monte Vista was scrappy, but very quick," Huerta said.
He said the Bobcats struggled a bit on defense in the first quarter and again in the third when Monte Vista scored its two touchdowns.
Wide receiver Oakley Hayes had two receptions for 65 yards and one touchdown. He had another TD called back by penalty.
Huerta said Chance Wyatt and Pedro Vigil keyed the defense. Wyatt had 13 tackles; Vigil had 12.
Hubert also had a strong game on defens,e Huerta said.
Hayes and Josh Plehinger had solid games at the defensive corner positions, Huerta said.
"We played well enough to win," the Ignacio head coach said.
"But there's a lot of work to be done."
Ignacio will play at Centauri next Friday.
