I just spent a week in San Bernardino, Calif. Every evening, there were thousands of gallons of Colorado water running down the streets from lawns being watered. It was painful to see.
Returning to Durango, it was just as painful to see the river so low and water running down the streets from citizens, businesses, even the city wasting water. Some other communities have put in place some kind of common-sense water conservation restrictions. However, Durango could not bring itself to do so.
The residents of Durango always have bent over backward to do the right thing. People sometimes need some prompting from the community.
This is the time for the City Council to take the lead and do the right thing. If it takes the lead, I know people of Durango will be happy to do their part, and feel good about it.
