Work began Tuesday on a project to replace the Mineral Creek Bridge on U.S. Highway 550 south of Silverton, a Colorado Department of Transportation news release said.
The bridge, built in 1955, has been deemed "structurally deficient" and will be replaced with a single-span, steel-girder structure with wider shoulders.
The new bridge will be constructed west of the existing structure, and the highway will be realigned to join it.
CDOT is expecting minimal effects on traffic from the construction, which is expected to be complete in September 2010.
The cost of the project is $4.4 million.
