I was intrigue by the coverage (Herald, Aug. 22) of La Plata County Commissioner Joelle Riddle's decision to switch her affiliation to independent.
In the first paragraph, it said Riddle won her post "with party support" in 2006. She won her post with a lot more than Democratic Party support. I was her communications manager during the campaign, and I am an independent. My husband is Republican and voted for Riddle. I suspect there were many who supported Riddle regardless of her party - and will do so in the future.
I want my public officials to study the issues and make decisions that are best for the county, even if that goes against the party line. Commissioner Wally White has an easy job - he just votes as his party tells him.
I respect the tough decisions that Riddle has made. I wholeheartedly agree with Riddle that partisan politics has no place in local and county government.
We should be spending our time debating the issues, not whether an official is being true to his or her party.
