50 years ago: “Without knowing, judges picked Carol Brice, 10, and Tommy Brice, 9, brother and sister, as Becky Thatcher and Huck Finn out of hundreds of entries during the annual Huck Finn Day. Selected as Miss Freckles was Lee Ernst, 7 and as Mr. Freckles, Bruce McCully, 8.”
25 years ago: “The 30-year-old man accused of gunning down Durango resident Jack Strever, was ruled competent to stand trial in 6th Judicial District Court. A former Durango resident, the man was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the Nov. 11, 1986, slaying of Strever. Strever, 59, was gunned down in front of his home at 430 Seventh St. shortly after noon.”
