Why are the other stores in town that offer the convenience of a small plastic bag for customers to carry out their purchases not being saddled with the bothersome tax (fee) being considered by the City Council? Do they just want to tax our food only? Do they want us to pass around the E. coli by making us use recyclable bags? The number of these bags, which are so useful around the house, that end up in the dump must be tiny compared with the water bottles, broken plastic dinnerware, etc. The environmental impact is small, so what is going on?
Another thing that bugs me is, why can’t the people vote on such a contentious issue? I have heard it is about $10,000 to $20,000 to fund a special election while it will cost more than $100,000 to implement this tax – not counting the legal fees that are sure to follow.
Give the residents a chance to be heard or throw out the tax.
