Ice cream social to celebrate veterans
Area veterans (Marvel, Red Mesa, Kline, Breen and Hesperus) will be honored at an ice cream social at 2 p.m. Saturday at the home of Pat and Lila Greer, 8097 County Road 100, Hesperus.
Participants are asked to bring homemade ice cream, dessert or topping to share. People are encouraged to invite a veteran or someone currently serving in the military or reserves to be honored.

Instructor introducing tai chi, qigong free
A free introduction to tai chi and qigong will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Schneider Park near the 9th Street bridge.
The hour-long session will be presented by instructor Tim Richard with Durango Tai Chi Club. Richard is a 15-year practitioner of Taijiquan, training intensively in China. The participants will learn how to use tai chi and qigong to reduce stress and revive energy.
Tai chi and qigong are great for arthritis, fibromyalgia, and lower-back, neck and shoulder pain. Participants will learn relaxation techniques and whole-body biomechanics to improve posture, balance and overall well-being.

AARP to host driver-safety program
An AARP Driver Safety Program will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Pine Room at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
The classroom refresher course is especially designed for drivers ages 50 and older. Auto-insurance discounts are available in most states through an insurance agent. The cost is $12 for AARP members or $14 for nonmembers.

Dementia, Alzheimer’s support group to meet
A support group for family members and caregivers of people with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or any chronic illness will meet at 10:30 a.m. today at Durango/La Plata Senior Center, 2424 Main Ave.

Farm stand is open Thursdays at college
The Old Fort Farm Stand is open from 1 to 4 p.m. every Thursday on the west side of the Student Union building at Fort Lewis College.
The stand features fresh produce, grass-fed beef, pork and value-added items. All products are grown at the Old Fort at Hesperus using organic practices. This week’s available offerings include mixed greens, spinach, kale, chard, arugula, radishes, snow peas, onions, garlic, broccoli, cilantro, basil, pestos (cilantro, basil and scape) and pickled radishes. Cash, check or Skycash are accepted.

Durango library to host book sale
Friends of Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave., will host a book sale from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Books are a $1.50 a pound, audio is priced as marked and mystery bags will be available.
