100 years ago: “Work is progressing rapidly on the State Highway by the crew of men under Road Supervisor Dowell. About 30 men are employed, and they are busy repairing the old Otto Mears’ Toll Road between the Ledge and the Ledge Mine. ... The grade of the road is perfect, showing that Mr. Mears many years ago built a first-class road.” – Silverton Miner
75 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Sunnyside News: “A class for the study of home nursing was organized at the schoolhouse. Nearly every woman and girl in the community enrolled. The meeting for July 20 will demonstrate bed making for invalids.”
50 years ago: “A cardboard box, exact dimensions are unimportant, a piece of white paper, a nail hole and your own eyes are all that are needed to get a safe look at Saturday’s eclipse of the sun. In Durango, time of the eclipse is from 2:22 to 3:32 p.m.”
25 years ago: “Lean and not quite so mean, the final draft of the county’s oil and gas development regulations was approved by the La Plata County Planning Commission. The 33-page document – simplified and trimmed by 12 pages – now will advance to the county commissioners and be subject once again to public scrutiny at the commissioners’ public hearing.”
