Extension office to offer pressure-canner testing
La Plata County Extension Office will offer free pressure-canner testing at Durango Farmers Market from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Aug. 17.
This service is for gardeners and cooks who plan to preserve food using a pressure canner and canning jars this summer and fall.
Pressure canners should be tested once a year for safety. Participants should bring their entire pressure canning lid including pressure gauge, sealing ring, and any rubber plugs.
If the lid uses weights instead of a pressure gauge, the sealing rings and plugs will be inspected but it cannot be tested for pressure. Bring the pot if it appears damaged or is hard to open.
This service is offered free to the public courtesy of the Family and Consumer Science Program and will be staffed by the program’s master food safety advisers.
