National network helps firefighters get to source of smoke
A thunderstorm passes through La Plata County, lighting up the sky from Animas Mountain to Missionary Ridge. The Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch Center tracks lightning strikes in the region using the United States Precision Lightning Network. From July 19 to 25, 41,318 bolts of lightning reached the ground in Southwest Colorado.
Jennifer Jardine, a dispatcher with the Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch Center, monitors available firefighting resources and radio traffic after an active evening of lightning strikes the previous day.
Thunderstorms during the months of June and July can create wildland fires in La Plata County. Before dispatching a crew to investigate, the Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch Center consults the United States Precision Lightning Network map to get a precise location of lightning strikes that may be responsible for smoke reports.
A thunderstorm moves through the Hermosa area. During the monsoon season, it’s not uncommon to register 6,000 lightning strikes in 24 hours across Southwest Colorado.
