Barrel horse race to be held Saturday
The National Barrel Horse Association will host a barrel race on Saturday at the outdoor arena of the Montezuma County Fairgrounds, 30100 U.S. Highway 160 in Cortez.
This will be the fourth race of the Buckle Series. The entry fee for the 4D Jackpot Open will be $40; and the entry fee for the 4D Youths and Seniors will be $30. The time-only runs will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the open race at 12:30 p.m.

Boy Scout Troop to host celebration
Boy Scout Troop 501 will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a reception, special presentations and a Court of Honor from 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 25 at the First Presbyterian Church, 1159 East Third Ave.
People are invited to wear their Class A uniform if they still have one.

Kroegers raising money for Bear Smart
Cashiers at Kroegers Ace Hardware, 8 Town Plaza, are selling $1 and $5 “Bear Paws” in August as a fundraiser for Bear Smart Durango.
Customers purchasing at least $10 worth of Bear Paws receive a free Bear Smart bumper sticker. Bear Smart Durango works to help people and bears coexist for the benefit of both by addressing the root causes of human and bear conflict.
Health presentation to take place Thursday
“Juice Plus, Prevention Plus, Stay Well For Life” will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Eolus Room of the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.
Valerie Miles, M.D., will lead the presentation. She is the founder and co-owner of Progressive Pediatrics in Jacksonville, Fla., where she has integrated conventional and complementary medicine to provide the best care for pediatric patients since 2000. Miles has done numerous presentations for physicians and the community.
Participants will learn the basics of staying well; the secret to peak performance in sports and fitness; how to significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity and diabetes; and the key to preventing disease and living in peak health.

Local nonprofit to sell school supplies
The Southwest Center for Independence, a local nonprofit that supports independent living for people with disabilities, will be selling school supplies from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Walmart, 1155 S. Camino del Rio.
Proceeds will benefit local youth programming in the community.

Vendors, entertainment sought for festival
Mancos Public Library will present a Harvest Heritage Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 22 in Boyle Park in Mancos.
The festival will be a community celebration of the harvest season featuring foods of the harvest and related demonstrations, activities, arts and crafts.
