Forty years after half a million gathered in upstate New York for three days of peace, love and music, a more modest but no less dedicated crowd will descend on Ignacio this weekend for the second annual La Boca Center for Sustainability Harvest Festival.
The festival is a collaboration between the center and 4c, the Conscious Creative Cultural Connection, two organizations that promote local culture, education and agriculture.
The Harvest Festival will be festive - almost 20 bands and DJs will perform today and Saturday to entertain campers from the time they roll out of their sleeping bags until they crawl back into their tents in the dark of night.
And crawl they should, because today and Saturday are so chock full of goings-on that attendees will be hard-pressed to find enough time in the day to experience even a portion of it all.
In between the music, organizers will hold workshops on permaculture, food production and preservation, mycology, timber framing, milling, basket weaving, fire starting, sweat-lodge construction, crochet, art, apple pressing and countless other skills that on any other weekend could transform the festival crowd into a self-sustaining community. Which is kind of the point.
The Harvest Festival continues 4c's fascination with the changing seasons. The local organization held similar celebrations for the spring equinox and summer solstice, and the festival comes one week before the Sept. 21 autumnal equinox.
Campers likely will stay dry, but some discreetly stowed raingear is a good backup plan, too. Predictions call for mostly sunny skies with a 20 percent chance of showers Saturday and Sunday.
