Southern Baptist church to study book of Joshua
First Southern Baptist Church of Durango will begin a detailed study of Joshua at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the church Fellowship Hall, 1715 West Second Ave.
The 20-week study will be a chapter-by-chapter and verse-by-verse study of this first of the Old Testament historical books. Introductory matters will include a summary of the Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament that provide the background to the Book of Joshua.
The class will be taught by Tom Cummins. He has taught the Bible and about religion for 15 years and holds master’s degrees in biblical studies and religious education from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
Christ the King Lutheran Church announces events
Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road, will officially install the Rev. Tim Orlowski as the new permanent pastor.
Bishop Jim Gonia, bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will preside at the installation ceremony and will preach at the 5 p.m. today service and at the 10 a.m. Sunday service. Treats will be served after both services. All are welcome.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will celebrate its 25th anniversary Sept. 7 and 8. Christ the King has several activities planned to mark the occasion, including free car washes and a barbecue Sunday morning.

Congregation Har Shalom to host High Holy Days
Congregation Har Shalom, 2537 County Road 203, will host these events for High Holy Days with Rabbi Elliot Baskin:
Erev Rosh Hashanah will be held from 6:45 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Erev Rosh Hashanah Mindfulness Session Contemplative Jewish Meditation will take place from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. The Erev Rosh Hashanah Evening Service with sermon will be held at 7:30 p.m.
A morning service will take place Thursday. A Rosh Hashanah Mindfulness Session Contemplative Jewish Meditation will take place from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. Rosh Hashanah morning service with Torah service and shofar blowing will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Rosh Hashanah Light Oneg will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. An inter-generational service will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. Tashlich and a potluck picnic will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Iris Park, 1205 Camino del Rio.
A Rosh Hashanah II Meditative Hike and Torah Discussion about Isaac’s offering will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday on the Colorado Trail. The hike will begin with a shofar blast, followed by a text study and trail kiddush. Participants should meet at the trailhead parking area, 3.5 miles from Main Avenue on 25th Street. People should bring water, snacks and something to sit on.
Bible Study Fellowship to meet Sept. 12
Bible Study Fellowship will meet at 9 a.m. Sept. 12 at First United Methodist Church, 2917 Aspen Drive.
The study is interdenominational and open to women. There will be a children’s Bible study for infants to children age 5. This year’s study will be the Gospel of Matthew. There will be a welcome session for new members from 9 to 11 a.m.
