Colorado’s rice pioneers

Durango crop may be first to be successfully grown in the state
Tom Bridge, owner of Durango Nursery & Supply, and Lisa Ahern, the nursery’s production manager, check a stock tank filled with Duborskian rice. They believe the crop is the first rice successfully grown in Colorado.
At Durango Nursery & Supply, Tom Bridge and Lisa Ahern planted rice in an 8-foot galvanized stock tank after starting it in a greenhouse.
Rice thrives in a warm and long growing season, a challenge to growing it in Southwest Colorado’s semi-arid environment.
Lisa Ahern, production manager at Durango Nursery & Supply, germinated the Duborskian rice, which she thinks was key to its success.
