Durango opened Southwestern League play the way it finished preseason play - with another loss.
Grand Junction defeated the Durango High School boys soccer team 1-0 on Friday night in the Grand Valley, but Demons head coach Scott Emrich again was encouraged by his side's product.
"This was probably the best the boys have played," he said. "Our back four really did well."
Emrich said Garhett Stafford, Taylor Graham, Josiah Arnold and Jonathan Naranjo made up the Demons' defense in their
"It was a good performance by them."
Durango thought it was lining up for a direct kick late in the second half, but Emrich said the referee changed his mind and awarded possession to the opponent. Grand Junction quickly played the ball forward, and the Demons' change in fortune led to a transition goal for the Tigers.
"That was a tough way to lose," Emrich said.
Durango is 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the SWL.
"Grand Junction was good. They played well," Emrich said. "We didn't give up many chances, no quality opportunities.
"We had a couple of good quality chances on goal again, but we just couldn't finish again."
DHS will play Montrose at 11 a.m. today in its sixth consecutive road game to start the season.
