Mancos man chisels door designs by hand
Mancos woodcarver Jay Fann makes many commissions on doors for luxury residences. He’s also done work for churches and other public buildings. Never picking up a tool or turning on a tablesaw, he took a job in 1981 working as a furniture apprentice in Sante Fe, and has been working with wood ever since.
His skill is on the cusp of art, says Mancos woodcarver Jay Fann.
Mancos woodcarver Jay Fann says he makes most of his doors out of sugar pine, which he says is light and stable.
Woodcarver Jay Fann does his chiseling by hand and draws his designs by pencil, instead of using software. His doors start at 3,000.
