A La Plata County man was rescued by helicopter Sunday evening on Missionary Ridge.
The man, whose name was not immediately available, was thrown from a horse and suffered shoulder injuries and respiratory problems while he was hunting west of Virginia Gulch on the north end of Missionary Ridge, said Butch Knowlton, director of La Plata County’s Office of Emergency Management.
The man’s hunting companions used a global satellite positioning receiver to mark the victim’s location, Knowlton said. They then hiked to a high point and used a cell phone to call dispatch about 5:30 p.m.
"We evaluated the injury and then responded with a helicopter up there," Knowlton said.
An Air Care helicopter from Farmington landed in a safe location about 500 yards from the camp.
The man was stabilized and carried to the helicopter. He arrived at Mercy Regional Medical Center about 9 p.m.
Because the man’s name was not available, his condition was unknown Monday night.
