Local initiated into Phi Kappa Phi
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi announces that Amanda Champany of Durango was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.
Champany was initiated at The University of New Mexico. Champany is among approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees also may qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni.
Former FLC professor presents at conference
Jennifer Trujillo presented at the International Teachers of English as a Second or Other Language conference in Portland, Ore., on March 26-29.
The acceptance rate to the conference is less than 14 percent from expert submissions. This year the convention drew about 6,100 participants from 131 countries.
The academic presentation asked participants to consider English Language Learners who have been in programs for six years or more, and the continued influence of the native language. Participants explored the linguistic complexities that literacy in English requires of ESL students. The workshop addressed linguistic transfer as a useful basis for personalized, classroom or small-group instruction.
Trujillo was a professor at Fort Lewis College for 12 years and is currently the director of Global Learning Frameworks at Pearson Education. She lives in Durango, telecommuting and traveling for this position.
