Undaunted riders adjust to shortened course

Fort Lewis Cross Country Race, 8:30 a.m., Fort Lewis College.
Kids races fueled by SPRITE, ages 3-12, benefits the Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County, 10 a.m.-noon, Ninth Street and Main Avenue.
Cruzer Criterium, costume cruiser parade, benefits the Women's Resource Center, noon-1 p.m., Ninth Street and Main Avenue.
Subaru Downtown Criterium presented by Morehart-Murphy, 1:30-4 p.m., downtown Durango, Ninth Street and Main Avenue.

Iron Horse makes room for all

Cyclists take off from the start of the Citizens Tour of the 43rd annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic on Saturday. Even though the race was shortened to finish at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, riders still were faced with a 27-mile ride and 2,281-foot climb.
A rider races north on U.S. Highway 550. Cool, breezy, sunny conditions greeted cyclists Saturday morning, but rain and lightning were reported in Silverton in the afternoon, perhaps confirming the Friday night decision to shorten the road race.
