Silverton Mountain announced Thursday that it will open during the middle of the week beginning in December. The ski
area said it's changing its schedule to offer skiing when Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort is closed.
In years past, Silverton has been open only on Saturdays and Sundays during the first two weekends in December. After
that, it begins operating on its normal Thursday through Sunday schedule.
That's the schedule it typically has for the majority of the ski season.
Last month, DMR said if there isn't enough snow at the beginning and end of its season, it could open weekends only.
DMR has said its goal was to be open Friday through Sunday for the first three weekends, Nov. 27-29, Dec. 4-6, and
If snow conditions allow it, DMR has said it will open for the full week both early and late in the season.
Regardless of natural snow, Purgatory will open seven days a week beginning Dec. 18, DMR said.
Silverton Mountain hopes to capitalize on DMR's varying days of operation.
DMR's scheduling "presents a unique opportunity to provide additional early season mid-week ski days at Silverton
Mountain this year."
Silverton said it will keep its Wednesday through Sunday schedule for the first few weeks of December or until DMR
opens seven days a week.
In a news release, Silverton Mountain said if DMR does not open during the week before Dec. 18, it will move its
opening day to Dec. 2.
