Proving once again the there's more to the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall than just concerts, the Chinese
Golden Dragon Acrobats return to Durango Wednesday with another show of mind-numbing feats of physical skill that
seemingly belie the laws of physics.
World-renowned impresario Danny Chang and choreographer Angela Chang combine award-winning acrobatics, traditional
dance, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music and theatrical techniques to present a family-friendly
show of skill and beauty.
In November 2005, the Golden Dragon Acrobats made their Broadway debut at the New Victory Theater in New York.
The successful run earned two of the most prestigious New York Drama Desk nominations - impresario Chang for Unique
Theatrical Experience and Chang for Best Choreography. The acrobats have been annual visitors to Durango since 2004.
With more than 30 years of continuous touring in the United States, the performers in the Golden Dragon Acrobats have
earned a reputation for their commitment to the highest of production values and an attention to artistic details
that is unparalleled in the art form.
Some of routines performed are almost cartoonish in their impossibility. The acrobats stack each other and props so
high as to defy gravity (witness a man doing a handstand balanced atop 10 vertically stacked chairs), yet there's
rarely if ever a misstep or fall. The athletes perform to traditional Chinese music while juggling, climbing, jumping
and carrying each other and a host of objects around the stage.
Because of the music and the seeming ease with which they perform, the show maintains a serene, relaxed feel
It's not a circus that landed on the Concert Hall stage, but rather a perfectly choreographed sequence of artistic
expression that just happens to require superhuman strength and agility.
The 25-members of the current touring company, hailing from Hebei, China, continue to perform to sold-out audiences
in nearly every major market in the country. The Golden Dragon is the only Chinese acrobatic company touring
year-round in the United States.
