The Bayfield High School boys basketball team opened the season against the pressing and running Panthers of Piedra
The Wolverines dropped their opener 79-33 Tuesday night at the BHS gym.
But their effort and resilience pleased new head coach Bill Hesford. I have to give my guys a lot of credit," Hesford
said. We played hard. The second half was much better than the first. Nobody quit."
He said Piedra Vista used a tough full-court press, rotating all 12 players into the game.
We had lot of turnovers in the first half, and they got a big lead," Hesford said.
But, he said, the Wolverines handled the pressure much better in the second half.
Michael Folk, Jared Qualls and Seth Roubideaux each scored seven points for Bayfield.
Piedra Vista had nine players in the scoring column as the Panthers improved to 1-0.
They were a very, very talented group," Hesford said. They were very disciplined a good team."
He said the Wolverines will start to regroup and get ready for the Kirtland Tournament next weekend.
The BHS boys basketball team will play Bloomfield in the first round of the Kirtland Tournament at 3:30 p.m.
The Wolverines also will play games Friday and Saturday in Kirtland.
We've got some hard work to do. But we're excited about it," Hesford said.
