The Durango High School wrestling team will showcase a brand new lineup and a brand new wrestling mat this season.
The Demons will host Ignacio in a nonconference dual meet at 7 p.m. today at the DHS gym.
We've got a brand new mat this year," said Durango head coach Doug Cuddie. The Durango Wrestling Club helped with the
new mat, so we're ready to go."
The second-year head coach said the Demons have been working hard in the practice room.
We've got 22 guys out. We could always use some more. But the guys who are out are working really hard," Cuddie
I'm really happy with the guys we do have out," he said.
He said the Demons will have some open weight classes, like 215 pounds.
They also return some experienced wrestlers in state qualifiers C.J. Hamby and Rudy Peterson.
Hamby, Peterson and teammate Elliott Salazar all ran cross country in the fall to improve their fitness for wrestling
season, Cuddie said.
They ran cross country to stay in shape, and they did a good job."
He said the three also did a lot of offseason wrestling work.
They've done a lot to improve," Cuddie said.
Peterson, a junior, will wrestle at 103 pounds for the Demons.
Hamby is targeted at 119 pounds. He's a senior.
Salazar is at 135.
He's looking really, really good this year," Cuddie said.
He said his early season lineup includes Estevan Paulli at 112 pounds.
Junior Donald Kirby is back for the Demons at 130 pounds.
Dakota Sutherlin, a sophomore, likely will start at 152, Cuddie said.
Cory Prentice, a senior, is listed at 160.
Sophomore Joe Ott-Edwards will open the season at 171 pounds.
Trevor Gillen will handle duties at heavyweight this season.
That leaves question marks or openings at 125, 140, 145, 189 and 215.
We'll have some open spots, like 215," Cuddie said. No doubt. But we're working on filling those (other) spots."
He said the Demons are eager to open the season with tonight's dual against Ignacio, one of the top-ranked Class 2A
teams in the state.
We're working hard. It's exciting to be in the (wrestling) room," Cuddie said.
After tonight's wrestling opener, the Demons will travel to the Farmington Invitational on Saturday.
