I have read numerous running books during the course of my obsession with this sport and found Chi Running by Danny
Dreyer to be one of my
Simply put, it validates many of my running theories and supports the evidence that, if done correctly, we can run
injury-free well into old age.
Every sport requires training in technique and hours of practice to improve.
However, many believe that since we run from the time we are toddlers that somehow it comes naturally to us.
Possibly, as children we ran naturally and seemingly effortlessly. But as adults, for many, it has been the cause of
repeated injuries and the subsequent frustration that goes along with the injuries.
Stress and tension are the main reasons adults do not run like they did as children," Dreyer said.
In Chi Running, Dreyer teaches us how to combine relaxation with biomechanically correct running form. Chi means life
force; it is the life-giving energy that unites body, mind and spirit.
Sixty-year-old Dave Sigurslid, a local physician and lifelong runner, thought his running days were over after a
congenital spinal defect and subsequent injuries progressed to the point where he could barely walk.
After spinal surgery, Sigurslid knew instantly the surgery was successful.
It was so great," Sigurslid said.
I could walk comfortably again for the first time in years."
Although he was walking and had begun skiing again, Sigurslid thought his running days were finished, until he read the
book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall.
McDougall mentions Chi Running in his book and discusses the primitive Tarahumara runners, who use a midfoot running
I remembered my wife had a copy of Chi Running," Sigurslid said. I read the book and thought, 'Wow, this is so
cool, and I immediately ran up Animas Mountain using the technique the way I thought he taught me (in the book) and had
no soreness whatsoever, which had never happened to me
Shortly thereafter Sigurslid looked online and found a chi running workshop and was blown away.
Chi running is based on a set of principles that will help you run and train in a more effortless and efficient way.
The fundamentals are great posture, relaxed limbs, loose joints, engaged core muscles, a focused mind and good
Once the fundamentals have been taught, the skills must be practiced and reviewed regularly.
The eight-hour workshop was excellent," Sigurslid said.
The instructors filmed each runner at the beginning, and by the end of the day everyone was running the same way. They
trained you to run in the proper form, and it was absolutely wonderful. It teaches you to change your posture by
leaning from the ankles and how to be a midfoot striker while contracting your lower abdominals, the place that guides
If you have struggled with pain and injury and consequently given up running or simply lost the joy you once felt, I
recommend Chi Running and incorporating Dreyer's fundamentals into your running regimen.
It could be a life-changing experience for you as it has been for many others.
