A mix of snow and sun and snow greeted skiers for the first Coke Race of the season last weekend at the Nordic Center
The races were held on the opening day of the cross country ski area, located across U.S. Highway 550 from Durango
It really was lovely weather snowing and sunny," said Nordic Center Director Helen Low. It was fun."
She said the turnout was encouraging with nearly 40 skiers participating in the classic- format races.
The Durango Nordic youth team featured one of its biggest turnouts in years at the season-opening races.
In the overall men's 10K, Lars Ellefson won in 27 minutes, 14 seconds. He's a U23 skier.
Joe Szeckely was second in 29:15. Dom Schiavone was third in 30:20.
Jeff May was fourth (32:00), with Elliott Saslow fifth (34:24).
Jana Freeburn won the women's 10K in 37:29. Diane Legner was second (49:04). Sandy Schwartz was third (55:14) The
boys 5K was won by Haakon Sigurslid (13:24). Sepp Kuss was second (13:43).
Rachel Hampton was first in the girls 5K (14:53). Hannah Madden was second (15:10), with Lily Oswald fourth and Amy
In the shorter 3K for younger girls, Avra Saslow was first (13:30) with Hannah Peterson second (13:47). Marit May was
third (16:47). Katja Freeburn was fourth (17:45).
The next race in the Coke Series will be a skate-ski race Jan. 9. The Nordic Center at Purgatory features more
than 16 kilometers of trails groomed for classic and skating. This season, the cross country ski area has opened a
new trail, the Lynx Loop near Boyce Lake.
