Durango officials approved Sante Alternative Wellness’ application to open today.
This is the third recreational location to receive approval from the city since the moratorium on stores was lifted in mid-August.
Sante must still pass all of the necessary inspections before opening and receive La Plata County approval for its grow location. Owner Ron Guffy could not predict when the downtown retail marijuana shop might be able to open.
The two other retail marijuana shops – Animas Herbal Wellness and Durango Organics – received city approval in late September.
The former needed to finish remodeling and expects to open soon; the latter started selling recreational marijuana shortly after it received approval.
On Friday, the Durango City Council discussed possibly using the sales tax from retail marijuana to fund the trolley next year and avoid imposing a $1 fee.
If City Council decided to do this, the city might have to cut services from the general fund because it is unknown how much new revenue recreational marijuana might generate, City Manager Ron LeBlanc said.
