Rudy Peterson of Durango wrestled to a third-place finish at the multi-state, multi-class Warrior Classic in Grand
Junction on Saturday.
Peterson, a junior, lost a morning semifinal match to a 103-pounder from Delta. But he rallied to win the third-place
match, overcoming a third-period deficit with a pin of his opponent from Montrose.
Rudy wrestled really well all weekend," Durango head coach Doug Cuddie said. It's nice for him to finish on the
podium as a junior."
Cuddie said Peterson trailed
4-2 in his third-place match before he pulled off the pin for the third-place medal.
He was outstanding. Even in the match he lost, he wrestled well," Cuddie said.
C.J. Hamby, Durango's other semifinalist at the Warrior Classic, dropped two matches.
He lost to Pueblo South before falling to a wrestler from Montrose in the consolation bracket.
He didn't wrestle real well, and he knew it," Cuddie said. He knows he's got some work to do."
Cuddie said the 32-team Warrior Classic is a great midseason test.
I think we could have won a few more matches up here. But it was a good experience," Cuddie said.
The Demons also sent a handful of wrestlers to the Piedra Vista Invitational in Farmington this weekend.
Heavyweight Trevor Gillen and 103-pounder Clay Dillon led the Demons with third-place finishes at Piedra Vista.
Dakota Sutherlin of Durango finished fourth at 152 pounds.
Teammate Garrett Marcum finished fourth at 125.
The DHS wrestlers will break for the holidays. They'll resume action Jan. 7 at Pagosa Springs.
