Animas River trout in decline

Fewer young browns particularly worrisome
Dan Cammack, with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, throws an anode into the Animas River to shock fish as part of a population study. Pete Derren, also with Parks and Wildlife, will then net them and put them into a tank. Jim White, aquatic biologist with Parks and Wildlife, guides the raft down the river through Durango in September. The survey showed declines in brown and rainbow trout numbers.
Mike Japhaet, a former aquatic biologist with Colorado Division of Wildlife, now volunteering his time during the Animas River fish census, holds a nice-sized brown trout collected during a population study in the Animas River in September.
