The Durango Arts Center is offering small grants to help local artists further their work.
The grant funds are available to artists in a variety of mediums including visual, performing, musical, literary, film and media.
The goal is to support ambitious projects that embrace experimentation. Funds can be used for materials, supplies, professional development or website fees.
“The arts are like science and medicine; they need investment,” said Cristie Scott, the executive director of the Durango Arts Center.
Artists in La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma, Dolores and San Juan counties are eligible to apply.
A total of $10,000 is available in increments of $250, $500 and $1,000.
In 2014, Minna Jain won $1,000 to create a solo wearable art exhibition. The band Bacon also was granted $500 to produce 500 CDs.
Last year, 27 people applied for the grants, and this year, Scott expects that number to double.
“I can see the competition being fierce,” Scott said.
The application cycle opened Dec. 5 and runs through Jan. 30. The winners will be notified March 6.
