As the winner of the 2016 Sunset Travel Award for Best Train Experience, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad could rest on its laurels. Instead, the train is making a bold statement to honor and support individuals affected by cancer – it has painted one of its historic boxcars lavender.
Lavender is the official color recognizing all cancers, including those that may not have a dedicated shade, such as pink for breast cancer or teal for cervical cancer.
In addition to running the boxcar throughout October, the railroad will encourage guests to donate to cancer nonprofits such as the American Cancer Society and to become informed about cancer and recent research.
“It’s our sincere hope this effort, in October and beyond, will lead to a greater understanding of cancer and its effects,” said Al Harper, owner of the Durango & Silverton, “and help contribute to the achievement of the ultimate goal here: discovering a cure once and for all.”
