Music Extravaganza to take place Feb. 25
Music in the Mountains will showcase and celebrate the musical talents of students from Durango and Bayfield at the third annual School Music Extravaganza at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall.
Alpine Bank, Music in the Mountains, Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall, Fort Lewis College Music Department, 3rd Ave. Arts and McDonald’s have partnered to support music education programs.
Three hundred students of all ages will perform in the event’s grand finale.
Methodist Thrift Shop offers scholarship
The Methodist Thrift Shop Board has established a scholarship for to local students advance their education.
Applicants are considered based on church involvement, leadership, community service, extra-curricular activities and personal attributes.
Students can pick up an application at the Methodist Thrift Shop, 986 East Second Ave., or at local high school counselors’ offices. The application deadline is March 15.
Alpine Bank offers scholarships
Graduating high school seniors can apply online for the J. Robert Young annually renewable scholarships.
Students meeting the criteria of the scholarship may complete an application at www.wc-cf.org.
The scholarship is offered to graduates of public high schools in locations served by Alpine Bank.
The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of financial need to a student with a grade-point average of 2.75 or higher who is seeking a business-related degree. Students must attend a Colorado college.
Two $1,000 renewable scholarships are awarded each year. The online application must be completed by March 15.
The scholarship was established in 2008 by Alpine Bank employees and an executive committee to honor bank chairman, J. Robert (Bob) Young, on the bank’s 35th anniversary.
Florida Mesa to host Coffee Talk
Florida Mesa Elementary School invites parents to have coffee and discuss ideas for working with your child at home in reading and math.
Coffee Talk is held from 7:20 to 7:40 a.m. Wednesday mornings in the front lobby.
‘Keys to Success’ needs volunteers
Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for the second annual “Keys to High School Success ... And Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who will attend high school next year.
The goal of the conference is to provide tools to support students in building positive self-images, strong relationships and a deep sense of self-advocacy – all of which lend to their success in high school and beyond.

Needham Elementary is holding book drive
Needham Elementary School will be collecting books to help a fellow school in Costa Rica build its library.
The La Paz Community School in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, needs books.
Right now, the school has about 280 books for all grades, pre-K through 12.
People can donate used fiction or non-fiction books in English for any reading level and any grade. Spanish language fiction books also can be donated.
Books can be dropped off through February at Needham or at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.

Miller Angel Games to support school
Miller Middle School’s fundraiser, The Miller Angel Games, will be held Feb. 23 on the Miller football field.
Students will divide into teams representing different countries and compete in various games. Before the games, students will collect donations from family members, friends and neighbors to help fund enrichments to curriculum and instruction.
This money will help provide new programs, technology and service- and action-oriented projects with a student focus.
The fundraising goal is $15,000. There are corporate sponsorship opportunities available for this event that carry on through the calendar year.

Continuing education available at FLC
The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
Eight “Nonprofit Management: Making a Difference” classes will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays from March 11 to May 6. Participants will learn about effective collaboration, strategic planning, strengthening donor relationships, developing a stellar board and more. Two classes will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 11 on the “Essentials of Nonprofit Financial Reporting” and/or “How to Work with the Media.” Certificate program enrollment is not required to take classes, which are reality-based and strategically emphasize creative solutions to critical, current, nonprofit-sector issues.
“Professional Development for Managers: Managing with Respect and Reason” is an 18-hour, five-class, experiential-education training that provides a learning environment for creating a new way of thinking. It is designed to help people identify and learn leadership styles that encourage, empower, develop and engage those they supervise. The focus is on self-awareness and managing a team. The class will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays for four Thursdays beginning April 16. There will be one training from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 18.

Animas High School enrollment is open
Animas High School has opened enrollment for incoming ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade students for the 2015-16 school year. The enrollment period is open until March 12.
Information sessions will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 21 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.; 6 to 7 p.m. March 3 at AHS; and 6 to 7 p.m. March 12 at AHS.

Durango school board to meet Feb. 24
The Durango School District 9-R board will meet at 5 p.m. Feb. 24 at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.
Escalante and Miller middle schools will be highlighted.
Christian school makes outing
Columbine Christian School students from kindergarten to eighth grade spent two days and one night at Cascade Lodge.
The school will host this event each year as students and staff members have fun exploring beyond the classroom. Parents helped cook, clean and chaperone during the event.
The school will not be in session from Wednesday to Friday for its Winter Break.
