A thief recently took three signs from the Colvig Silver Camps in the 9000 block of Florida Road (County Road 240). The signs disappeared sometime Feb. 17 and were valued at $300, said La Plata County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Dan Bender.
The three wooden signs with white lettering hung vertically from a pole on the road and read “Colvig Silver the Camp.”
The two-sided signs were crafted by the founder of the camp the year it opened, said Clay Colvig, owner of the camp.
“Forty-five years ago my dad got his router out, and routed his letters into the sign,” he said.
The sign was stolen once before – 25 years ago. It turned up in a college dorm room, he said.
He suspects that someone took the sign again as a prank or memento.
“I’m hoping they just put it back,” he said.
He hopes to have it back for the camp’s anniversary celebrations this summer.
