Durango finally swam those state-qualifying times the Demons knew they were capable of.
Competing against Montezuma-Cortez at the Fort Lewis College pool in a makeup dual for both teams, Durango trumped
the Panthers 738-474 on Saturday in the pool.
More importantly, the Demons qualified their 200 medley relay and 200 free relay for the state meet.
This was our best meet of the year to now," Durango High School girls swimming coach Jordan Parker said. And we
picked up two state nods."
Haley Cotageorge, Kayla McCarthy, Ericka Pitcher and Anne Marie Pettinato swam a personal best in the 200 medley
relay for the Demons.
They killed it by 2 seconds," Parker said. They were awesome."
Katie Armbrecht, Pitcher, Pettinato and Lauren Dody swam a personal best in the 200 free relay, which came as a bit
of a surprise to Parker.
That one, honestly, I wasn't expecting," the first-year, full-time head coach said. She credited Dody for the team's
That girl, for me, was the highlight of my day," Parker said of the sophomore. She went out there and kicked her
The relay Parker expected to qualify for state - the 400 free relay - couldn't follow its teammates' swims and
finished 9/10ths from a state-qualifying time.
That relay is Pettinato, Sheyanne Hunsinger, Dody and Armbrecht.
I have no doubt they'll get it at Districts," Parker said. A couple of girls didn't have their best swims."
Hannah Chapman, a freshman on the 400 free relay B team, did. Parker said Chapman killed it on the B team, leading
off that relay," and the coach said a couple of changes might be in store for the Demons' Districts swim Feb. 5-6 in
Durango finished 1-2 in every event, and almost 1-2-3 in every event," Parker said.
This was just one more chance for everybody to swim before Districts, so that's always good," Parker said. This was
a great way to end our dual season, at home."
Durango celebrated its win with senior appreciation at the pool, too. The seniors on this year's team are co-captains
Hunsinger and Shelagh O'Kane, Kendall Kniffin, Katie Stone, Erin Burke and Cassie Cathcart.
Parker pulled a surprise punch, too, announcing next year's captains at the meet.
Parker tabbed McCarthy, Carrigan McMannis and Jamie Parnell to lead the Demons as next year's co-captains.
The combination of those three make for really good leadership," Parker said. (Hunsinger and O'Kane) will be
passing the torch to three good ones."
