St. Michael's of Santa Fe wrestled to the top of the annual Ignacio Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday at
Ignacio High School with 167.5 points.
Eleven teams competed.
Other top New Mexico schools crowded near the top with Bloomfield finishing second with 139 points, Piedra Vista third
with 117.5 and Farmington fourth with 87.
Bayfield was fifth with 64.5 points, and host school Ignacio finished sixth with 64 points.
It was a good tournament," Ignacio head coach Bob Overturf said.
It hurt us missing last week. We wrestled tough, but missing last week kinda hurt. We'll make the best of it."
Josh Plehinger finished first for the Bobcats at 140 pounds, and Chance Wyatt and Casey Haga both earned runner-up
finishes for the Bobcats at 215 and 130 pounds, respectively.
Jeff Herrera, the only other Bobcat to place, finished fifth at 125 pounds.
Bayfield High School
We ended up fifth, and I'm not unhappy with that," Bayfield High School wrestling coach Herb Stinson said. After the
way we wrestled this week, I thought we came out and wrestled well (Saturday)."
Aaron Velasquez was the Wolverines' lone tournament champion. The 152-pounder won the title and improved to
24-3 on the season.
Sonny Salazar, the Wolverines' 103-pounder, finished runner-up.
Bayfield's Taylor Swanemyr improved to 23-4 with his third-place
Justin Shupe (140) and Brenden Harrison (160) finished fourth for the Wolverines.
Bayfield also had fifth-place finishes from Drake Rhodes (112), Joe Zink (125), Josh McKnight (130), Michael Dupree
(135) and Tanner McGhehey (171).
We picked up a ton of matches, which is what we needed after the snowed-out matches last week," Stinson said.
